Constipation and Digestive Comfort: Gentle Complementary Self-Care

Inspired by the digestive and reflexology protocols in A Life Full of Light.

Constipation is common, but it can have many causes: diet, dehydration, inactivity, medication, stress, changes in routine or underlying medical conditions.

Start with the Basics

  • Drink adequate fluids unless your clinician has restricted them.
  • Increase dietary fibre gradually rather than suddenly.
  • Include vegetables, legumes, fruit and whole foods that suit you.
  • Walk or move every day.
  • Give yourself time to use the bathroom without rushing.

Reflexology and Acupressure

In my book, a traditional complementary combination for digestive comfort uses the colon reflex area together with points such as ST36 and CV6. Other digestive routines use Spleen, Stomach and Large Intestine meridian points.

These practices should be viewed as relaxation and self-care tools, not as a substitute for medical evaluation.

A Gentle Routine

  1. Take a short walk if you are able.
  2. Drink water.
  3. Massage the abdomen very gently only if comfortable.
  4. Use a familiar digestive reflex area on the foot or hand.
  5. Add one accurately located acupressure point or pair.
  6. Practice slow breathing for several minutes.

When Constipation Needs Medical Attention

Seek prompt medical advice if constipation is new and severe, accompanied by significant abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, blood in the stool, fever, unexplained weight loss, inability to pass gas, or a major change in bowel habits. Ongoing constipation also deserves evaluation rather than repeated self-treatment alone.
